Observations

We have clocked many kilometres in our quest to explore Berlin. The train system has proved relatively easy to negotiate. Yesterday we returned to Muesuem Island and I stood in steady rain to buy tix for the Nueves Museum. Turns out it was not "new art" as I half thought but paradise for Egyptologists. (Cheryl. Forget Cairo - come to Berlin!!!) Next we headed to the Zoo. Later we located Gemaldigalerie, with so many old paintings we only saw half before Museum closed. The audio guide here was free so that was a bonus. The nearby Sony center (yes, I know, we would spell it CENTRE) has English language films, but no screening times suited us so we headed home. Tried typical Berlin dish last night. Curry wurst. What arrived was a sausage, sliced, in a tangy gravy accompanied by a small mountain of Pomme fritters (thin chips). It seemed only fitting to wash it down with a German beer. OBSERVATIONS; Most taxis we have seen are Mercedes Benz Left hand drive vehicles can catch you out as a pedestrian Bikes are everywhere. Riders ring their bells to warn you if you are in their bike lane Only seen three of hundreds of bike riders wearing helmets Streets and countryside remarkably free from litter Pastries and pretzels everywhere. Despite this, German population has FAR LESS obesity than Australians. Despite this being summer, stations, m Public buildings and our hotel HAS HEATIFNG ON!! We keep our hotel room far cooler than standard. Step into hall and the warmth hits you. City buildings don't have verandah shelter. Maybe due to weight of snow in winter??? Off to observe more ...

  1. From your observations I can only surmise that German population less obese 'cos they are all riding around on bikes and not eating the pastries and pretzels littered everywhere! In Oz verandah's are for sun - not required in Europe. Trust the weather cheers up for you soon .... maybe that's why heating up in hotel ... "artificial summer" to make you feel better - albeit inside??? Jealousy kicking in - back to work tomorrow!
